Synthetic Turf Fields

Delta has four synthetic turf fields all providing year round play for Delta athletes.

Overview

Synthetic turf fields, in tandem with existing natural turf fields, significantly increase the amount of time available for play, as they are able to sustain continuous daily, year round use in all weather conditions with the exception of snow. They remain in use in the winter months when natural turf becomes soggy and muddy. Natural turf fields require 'rest', for grass to recover after heavy play whereas synthetic turf fields withstand back to back use. Typically, a synthetic turf field will allow four to five times more use than a natural turf field. While synthetic turf fields are usually used for scheduled play, they benefit everyone in the community by freeing up natural turf fields for non-scheduled use by families and residents to play 'pick up' games.

Synthetic turf fields are a cost effective and responsive answer to increasing sports field and community needs. The requirement of specialized maintenance to stay in top condition takes considerably less time and resources than natural turf fields. As well, these fields do not require watering and fertilizer; important considerations in today's world.

In 2007, health concerns linked to artificial turf fields were raised in some areas of the USA. Although, the types of surfaces affected were not the same as those of Delta's synthetic turf fields, the Corporation of Delta commissioned an analysis to ensure the safety of all users. The result of tests performed on samples of turf fibers and rubber crumb material at each of Delta's fields indicate these fields pose no significant health risks to field users.
