Agricultural Weed Control Program
The Corporation of Delta operates a seasonal Noxious Weed Control program on public land which includes the majority of dikes, slough banks and roadsides throughout Delta. The program is conducted under the provisions of the Provincial BC Weed Control Act and Delta's Noxious Weeds bylaw for the purpose of controlling noxious weeds, specifically Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense) and Bull thistle (Cirsium vulgare), in areas on and adajacent to agricultural lands. The program helps to maintain the health and vitality of agricultural lands in Delta.
These plants are not only removed mechanically but are mapped using GPS units and the data is uploaded into IAPP (Invasive Alien Plant Partnership), an invasive species database created through the BC Ministry of Forests and Range.
Other invasive species that are mapped with GPS but not removed during the weed control program season are:
- Scotch broom
- Giant hogweed/Cow's parsnip
- Tansy Ragwort
- Japanese knotweed
- Policeman's helmet
- Yellow-flag iris
