Delta Heritage Commission Scholarship Recipients 2010

The Delta Heritage Advisory Commission (HAC) has awarded the 2010 Delta Heritage Commission Scholarship to C.J. Pentland of Delta Secondary School for his photographic and written submission entitled "The Cozy Little Church" which addresses Delta's heritage in a creative and thoughtful manner.

The Cozy Little Church

St. Stephen's United

"St. Stephen's United, the small and historical church in the heart of East Delta, not only has played a key part of the community for many years, but also plays a very important role in the lives of my family and my grandparents, the Patons. This place of worship has been around since 1891. My family has been in attendance almost every Sunday for many of those years, and also has helped maintain the heritage building. With the church being a critical part of East Delta in its early days when it neighboured the elementary school, it is no wonder that many think highly of this building, with myself being one of them. It has a lot of meaning to me, as it has been the site of my baptism, my confirmation, and my parent's marriage, and I personally feel honoured to be linked to this great heritage site. On Christmas Eve, the special and unique service attracts many members of the community, even though they are not part of the congregation. Every single service though is so relaxed and personalized, as the congregation is like a family, one who comes together every Sunday to be comforted by each other's presence in its intimate sanctuary. That is just one of the many reasons why this homey little church will always have a place in my heart, just as it always has been in the hearts of many Delta residents."

Honourable Mentions were awarded to Keara Mager of South Delta Secondary School for her photographic submission, which speaks to a physical and cultural aspect of local heritage with reference to the Reifel Migratory Bird Santuary, and to Andy Stevens of Delview Secondary for his recorded composition titled "Bog Walk" about Burns Bog as part of our heritage.

The Delta Heritage Commission Scholarship is awarded annually to a Delta student graduating from a secondary school. The purpose of this award is to encourage students to display an interest in local or regional heritage, as demonstrated through an original piece of work. This $750 scholarship is applied to the recipient's post-secondary studies.

Mayor Lois Jackson will be presenting the award certificate to C.J. Pentland at the Regular Meeting of Delta Council on June 21, 2010 at 7:00pm in the Council Chambers at Delta Municipal Hall. Delta's HAC congratulates C.J. on a job well done and looks forward to next year's submissions.

Photographic submission by Keara Mager wins Honourable Mention

"Since 1972, the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, first owned by George C. Reifel, has been a well-known area for migrating birds. Without this facility, thousands of birds that travel south each winter would not have a safe environment to live in. My photograph speaks to a physical and cultural aspect of local heritage because it represents a wood duck, just one of 280 recorded species at the sanctuary, who is thankful to have this peaceful setting to rest at. If this haven was not brought in 1927, it could have been landscaped into buildings or condos for people to live in. I believe the birds need a home too, and the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary is the perfect example of one."

Musical composition submission from Andy Stevens wins Honourable Mention - Bog Walk

"The song is about Burns Bog. When I was a child, my family would always go on what we called "Bog Walks { mp3 3.67MB}". Growing up in a big family meant that our parents never wanted to spend too much money. Instead of spending money on going to the zoo or aquarium, my parents would take us out to the Bog. We would often walk for a very long time, but every now and then we would just stop and listen to the beauty of the Bog. I often would look up towards the sky and see the rays of the sun trickling between the trees. My song, title "Bog Walk", re-enacts the experience of a day's journey through Burns Bog, which has been a part of our heritage for quite some time."
