Battery Collection Program

At the January 11, 2010 Regular Meeting, Delta Council endorsed a household battery recycling program to establish a battery drop-off program at Municipal Hall, Recreation Centres and libraries located in Delta.

In an effort to deter batteries from being discarded at the Landfill and as part of Delta's commitment to promoting sustainability throughout the community, a Battery Collection Program has been developed to assist residents in the disposal of these hazardous materials. It is important that batteries are recycled, as they can contain hazardous metals such as mercury, cadmium, nickel and lead.

As part of the program, residential quantities of non-rechargeable, alkaline batteries can be brought to the following Delta facilities for safe disposal:

Tsawwassen

Ladner

North Delta

Please place batteries in the white battery recycling bucket located near reception.

Alternate Battery Programs

Rechargeable batteries including those from portable electronic devices (power tools, cell phones, cameras, remote control toys, etc.) are managed by the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) and can be dropped off at many large retail outlets. Please visit RBRC's website for more information.

Lead-acid car batteries have been banned from disposal as garbage as of January 1, 2008. The Lead Acid Battery Program is a provincial program to assist with the collection, transportation, and recycling of scrap lead-acid batteries weighing at least 2 kg, such as those found in automobiles, motorcycles, recreation, marine and locomotive vehicles.

For collection depot locations and to find out more information on lead-acid battery recycling, please visit Recycling Council of British Columbia's (RCBC) website or call the RCBC Hotline at (604) 732-9253.
