1:00 pm Mayor Lois E. Jackson and Delta Council are pleased to announce that the Corporation of Delta has been formally designated a Solar Community by the Honourable Blair Lekstrom, Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum on May 29, 2010. As a Solar Community, Delta will receive $5,000 to promote the use of solar hot water systems including information sessions for builders and developers and staff training in solar energy applications. SolarBC is a provincial program designed to promote solar hot water programs and solar initiatives in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and encourage clean energy in British Columbia. Solar hot water systems offset regular natural gas consumption using energy from the sun to heat solar collectors mounted on roofs. Further information can be found at http://www.solarbc.ca/ Last year, Delta was the first municipality in Metro Vancouver to install a solar hot water system on a municipal hall. Delta also hosted its first "Solar Day" open house on May 28, 2010 to demonstrate the benefits of solar hot water programs to the community. As a municipality striving to achieve innovative and sustainable energy, Delta has made regulatory changes to its bylaws to permit the installation of solar hot water systems and continues to investigate opportunities to further expand solar hot water within the community.
