Delta Donates Historic Tree Planks

December 19, 2007

2:00 pm

The Corporation of Delta recently donated planks from an iconic Delta log located in Burns Bog to the Provincial Government for the BC Showcase and Hosting Facilities. The planks will be located on the lower plaza of Robson Square in downtown Vancouver and will be displayed in a unique feature ceiling created with wood from communities around the province. The request for the planks was made to the Spirit of BC Community Committees across the Province.

The planks were milled from a log that was part of a large Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis) tree growing along the northeast edge of Burns Bog in the area known as the Delta Nature Reserve. The tree was growing beside an access road that runs north to south along the creek which drains this portion of the Bog and enters the Fraser River at Delta Cedar Products mill on River Road. The Spruce was growing close to a Western Red Cedar and both had been growing at an acute angle for at least a decade. The trees were severely damaged in the wind storms of early 2007 and had been cut up and left on site to decompose. The annual growth rings of the tree are very close together, which is to be expected of trees growing in the Bog; there is very little girth development as they grow. The tree was at least 160 years old.
