Fire Hazard Advisory

Office of the Mayor
July 29, 2009

Due to the prolonged and expected continuing hot and dry weather conditions, the Fire Danger Rating for Delta is EXTREME and poses a serious threat to our parks and natural areas.

The vegetation bordering municipal lands is extremely dry and the simplest of actions can cause a fire. Acting Fire Chief Funnell advises "that it could take up to two (2) weeks of continuous precipitation to lower the fire risk".

The Corporation of Delta is taking precautionary measures to minimize the risk of fires in municipal parks and wilderness areas. Effective as of Friday July 24, 2009, the Fire Chief has, by Order, declared Watershed Park and the Delta Nature Reserve CLOSED to the public. As always, Burns Bog continues to be permanently closed to the public.

An open burning ban is in effect for all areas of Delta. And given the current conditions, there is also a ban on open cooking (briquette and propane BBQs) in all Delta Parks until further notice.

We are asking local residents and businesses to exercise caution to reduce the risk of fires in parks, wilderness areas and Burns Bog. Extreme care must be taken during the operation of machinery and vehicles in the vicinity of these areas.

Delta Fire and Police, Park Patrols and Municipal Bylaw staff will be patrolling parks, beaches and Burns Bog access points to ensure there are no unauthorized activities taking place. Failure to comply with the Fire Chief's Order will result in violators being charged with an offence and issued a municipal ticket of $250.

The public is urged to exercise caution to reduce the risk of accidental fires. Please report any fires directly to 911 and any unauthorized activity that poses a risk of fire to the Delta Police Department's 24/7 non-emergency line at (604) 946-4411.
