Fire Hazard Advisory Continuing

August 12, 2009

The long range weather forecast is predicting above normal temperatures over the next two weeks. Although some precipitation has occurred over the past week, the land remains dry and the simplest of actions can cause a fire.

Tests in Watershed Park and the Delta Nature Reserve show (as depicted in the photograph) that apart from the surface level, ground fuel still poses a significant threat to the risk of fires in municipal parks and wilderness areas.

Watershed Park and the Delta Nature Reserve remain CLOSED to the public as per the Fire Chief's July 29, 2009 Order. Burns Bog continues to be permanently closed to the public.

An open burning ban is in effect for all areas of Delta including a ban on open cooking (briquette & propane BBQs) in all Delta Parks until further notice.

Delta staff will continue to patrol parks, beaches and Burns Bog access points to ensure there are no unauthorized activities taking place. Failure to comply with the Fire Chief's Order will result in violators being charged with an offence and issued a municipal ticket of $250.

The public is urged to continue to exercise caution to reduce the risk of accidental fires. Please report any fires directly to 911 and any unauthorized activity that poses a risk of fire to the Delta Police Department's 24/7 non-emergency line at 604-946-4411.
