Burns Bog Fire - Property Enforcement Issues Follow-up
October 6, 2005

During the fire fighting effort to save Burns Bog, The Corporation of Delta identified numerous bylaw violations on the adjacent property at 6145 104th Street. In addition, staff observed evidence of encroachment into the Bog and soil deposit activity that appears not to have been authorized.

While the fire has been extinguished, staff is continuing to work on the enforcement issues.

The Honourable Pat Bell, Minister of Agriculture and Lands, the Honourable Barry Penner, Minister of Environment, the Agricultural Land Commission, the GVRD together with Delta Mayor Lois Jackson and Council are committed to work together to protect the integrity of Burns Bog.

The Corporation of Delta is sending notification to the property owner relative to the municipal bylaw infractions and is proceeding to address the other property matters in cooperation with the Greater Vancouver Regional District and relevant provincial agencies.

A number of management and enforcement options are also currently being explored by the partnering agencies in order to determine next steps relative to property issues along the periphery of the Bog.
