Overview
In 2010, Delta Council endorsed a terms of reference to develop a strategy for long term agricultural viability. Delta's Agricultural Advisory Committee was requested by Council to provide advice and guidance on the development of an Agricultural Plan. With financial assistance from the Investment Agriculture Foundation of British Columbia, the process for the Delta Agricultural Plan commenced in the Spring of 2010.
A three phase approach was taken to develop the Delta Agricultural Plan. In the first phase, a Delta Agricultural Profile was prepared that outlines the current context of agriculture in Delta.
The second phase in the process focused on issues and options analysis. Two workshops were held with farmers and participants involved with agriculture. Issues facing agriculture and potential strategies that were discussed during consultation are summarized in an Issues and Options Report { pdf 924KB }.
During the third phase, the Delta Agricultural Plan was prepared. The Delta Agricultural Plan includes a vision and goals for agriculture as well as recommendations for action. A public open house was held September 13, 2011 to present a draft of the Delta Agricultural Plan and gather feedback. Comments received from the open house and the Agricultural Advisory Committee were incorporated into an updated plan. Council adopted the revised Agricultural Plan on October 24, 2011. The next step involves developing an implementation strategy for the recommended actions in the plan.
